Diagnosed Before Anything Is Ordered

Faults That Take The Room Down

These stop scanning on the day they happen. Each one is a call now, not a Monday call.

Hard-Down Tube Faults

These stop the room. If the console is reporting a numbered high-voltage fault, our CT service and repair page covers the wider chain.

Arcing that aborts a scan
A little arcing is normal and the system tolerates it. When it starts killing exposures mid-series, the tube's vacuum or insulation is going.
Filament open, no exposure
The system arms and produces nothing at all. There is no workaround and no partial mode, so the room stops.
60-0313 and high-voltage faults
The console reports the HV chain cannot sustain the requested technique. It can be the tube or it can be upstream, and guessing is expensive.
Housing oil seepage or thermal trips
Oil weeping from the housing, or a thermal switch dropping the system out of scan. This is interlock territory, not a watch-and-see item.

The Warnings Worth Acting On

Catching a tube here rather than at failure is the difference between a scheduled swap and an unplanned one. After any tube change the system needs recalibration and image-quality QA.

Anode bearing rumble
A hum or grind from the gantry that tracks with rotor spin-up. Worn bearings add friction and heat and they do not recover.
mA swings at a fixed technique
Tungsten comes off the filament and anode over the tube's life and unbalances it electrically. It is usually the precursor to sustained arcing.
Cooldown waits between series
The scanner makes you wait on heat units where it used to run back to back. Throughput slips before the tube actually fails.
Rings that survive an air cal
Rings normally mean a detector out of calibration, so a fresh air cal clears them. When it does not, look at tube output.

The classic signs are arcing that interrupts a scan, a rumble from the anode bearings, tube current that swings at a fixed technique, and cooldown waits that were not there before. Yes. A new tube does not produce identical output to the one it replaced, so Hounsfield unit values drift until the system is recalibrated. Skipping it is the most common reason a facility chases image-quality complaints for weeks after an otherwise clean tube swap. We recalibrate and run image-quality QA as part of the job.

Most replacements are a single-day job on-site including the calibration and QA afterwards. The longer variable is usually tube availability rather than labour, so identifying a failing tube early gives you more control over the schedule.

No. A CT x-ray tube is a sealed, evacuated assembly and its wear mechanisms are not field-repairable. The real decision is between a new tube and a refurbished one.

Either. We can source and supply it, or install one you have already procured. If a system is near end of life it may make more sense to look at a refurbished system or upgrade than to put a new tube in it, and we will say so.

That is a clinical and financial judgement rather than a fixed number. What we can say is that arcing does not improve on its own, and that an unplanned tube failure costs more than a scheduled one.
