Findings That Predict a Hard-Down
Every one of these is cheap while it is still a trend and expensive once it is a fault. This is the entire argument for a scheduled visit over waiting for the console to complain.
A GE CT tube logs arcs long before it refuses to make an exposure, and the count climbing visit to visit is the clearest warning you get. Read at a PM it buys you a planned tube order instead of a cancelled list.
Brush blocks wear as a matter of course, and the carbon dust they shed is what eventually causes the comms faults that stop a scan. Measuring the wear at a PM is routine; waiting until the scanner drops out is not.
When heat units stop dissipating on schedule the console starts holding you between series, and the room quietly loses throughput before anything faults. It usually points at the tube or the cooling loop rather than the software.
A chiller or heat exchanger losing capacity shows up as coolant creeping warm and flow falling off, well before a thermal trip. Left alone it shortens tube life, which is the most expensive part on the system.
Findings That Show Up in the Images First
The Slow Drift
These do not stop the room, which is exactly why they run for months. They surface as repeat scans, a failed phantom check or an accreditation finding rather than as an error on screen.
Air cals that will not hold between visits are the system telling you something upstream has moved. We check it at every PM and treat a repeat drift as a finding, not a reset - see CT scanner calibration.
Individual channels drift out of range before ring artifacts are visible at normal dose. Catching them on the low-dose check is the difference between a calibration and a detector module.
A table that indexes a little short or long puts slices where the protocol did not ask for them, and the images look fine until someone measures. It is a mechanical drift that only ever gets worse.
Rotation noise and bearing wear are audible and measurable months before the gantry stops turning. This is the single finding most worth acting on early, because the failed version of it takes the room down for days.
