A 450g ball pein hammer forged from Grade 5 titanium, with a sealed plastic handle. Non-magnetic and non-ferrous, so it can be carried and used inside Zone 4 where a steel hammer cannot.
Built for hospital biomedical engineering teams, clinical engineering technicians, and diagnostic imaging field service specialists. FDM Enterprises is a veteran-owned diagnostic imaging service and tool supplier based in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee.
Key Features:
- Material: Grade 5 / 6AL-4V titanium (non-magnetic, non-ferrous)
- Head weight: 450g
- Handle: Sealed plastic, not wood
- Zone 4 MRI Safe: Magnet room compatible
- Corrosion Resistant: Stands up to hospital disinfectants and salt water
- Weight: roughly 40% lighter than the equivalent steel hammer
One thing to know: titanium sparks when struck. It is safe around the magnet, not around fuel or solvent vapour. For explosive or flammable atmospheres the right material is beryllium copper or aluminium bronze.
Why a titanium hammer: a steel hammer is one of the most dangerous objects that can enter an MRI suite. At 450g it carries enough mass to be pulled hard by the static field, and a dropped steel head near the bore is a serious incident. Titanium removes the magnetic hazard entirely while keeping enough density to drive, seat and free parts.
Why the handle is plastic and not hickory: most titanium hammers ship on a wooden handle. Wood is porous, it splinters, and it cannot be wiped down with the alcohol and disinfectants used everywhere else in an imaging suite. A sealed plastic handle cleans the same way the rest of your kit does and will not shed into a controlled environment. In a clinical setting that is the better material, not the cheaper one.
Beyond the magnet room: the same non-magnetic, corrosion-resistant properties make titanium hammers useful in explosive ordnance disposal, marine and diving work, and semiconductor fabrication.
